Camtrap media tagging standards

Tag species

In this part we introduce standards and conventions when identify species and add tags to the camtrap media.

Info

We utilize hierarchical tags in the XMP metadata of an image for tagging. Therefore, when we mention "Species tag" we are referring to tags under the hierarchy named Species which results in the tag itself being in the form of Species/tag.

Tagging standards

  • For species that can be confirmed, tag it with its name, e.g. Species/Alpine musk deer

Note

Usually, the name should be in the provided taglist, if it's not, create a new species name following the Species naming convention.

  • For species that can't be confirmed, tag it with Species/Unidentified
  • For camtrap images where the camera is knocked over or set up indoors, tag it with Species/Useless data
  • For camtrap images where there's no creature, tag it with Species/Blank

Naming convention

We currently use the English vernacular name for species tagging. If you wish to add a new name, choose the one preferred by COL or GBIF. If you're unsure about which name to use, please consult us.

Note

The name accepted by COL is usually more preferred due to how our database is constructed. If you are interested in this, feel free to check out this post (programming stuff alert!).

The preferred format is: Capitalize the first letter and separate all words by spaces. For example: Wapiti, Alpine musk deer.

Rating

We use rating to label special media. Here's a simple guide:

  • 1-star (⭐): For clear, full-body images of animals or any other notable media you wish to highlight.
  • 5-star (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): for media showing special behavior or is aesthetically pleasing
